The Dispersed of God

"I don't belong in this world," the 88 year old woman commented, feeling frustrated with modern technology. I certainly empathized with that sentiment although for a different reason.

No truer words have been spoken in reference to Christians.

Peter clearly pointed out in the opening of his first letter that we are strangers here. Aliens in a land not our own.

In this vast, Christian diaspora the scattered and displaced belonging to God roam earth's surface until our final unification. Living in a land not our own.

Some, like Columbus, searching for a new land. Look up, I say. Yes, we explore the skies believing there is another frontier to call home. There is! Heaven. We occupy these temporal tents outside our homeland and search for a place of rest.

Entry doesn't require large sums of tax dollars; an expedition crew, or hi-tech equipment. We must pass through Jesus, the Christ and Son of God, to enter into the place of rest He is preparing for us.

When referring to the diaspora, "the scattering", the first thought for many might be the various Jewish dispersions in ancient history (by the Assyrians in 722 BC, Nebuchadnezzar in 597 and 586 BC or the Romans in 70 AD). Or you may think of the various deportations in numerous European, Asian, African, or Austrailian countries. Then, of course, there is the expulsion of the Native Americans from their tribal territories into the Indian diaspora of the Reservations.

I have learned from my research on the subject that the diaspora is the movement of a displaced or relocated population that shares a common ethnic identity yet maintains their traditions and religious practices.

In my view the modern Christian "nation" has some parallels to the Israeli nation. The ancient Israelites were often hated and mistreated by their captors. Today Christians are often rejected and looked down upon.

God used them to bring salvation to all nations as He does now in sending us out to share the Good News. Both the Israelites and the church being used by God in His eternal plan.

God used messengers, or prophets, to deliver truth and promise of restoration bringing hope to the multitudes in distant lands. Offering comfort and encouragement to those separated from their land of promise.

What did the dispersed need more than anything? A word from the Lord. Hope. Faith. In their distress in a foreign land they needed assurance that God was near. We must keep our longing for home with the Lord alive rather than meld into our respective societies.

Are our hearts prepared for the Day of Lord? Will we be counted among the diaspora and migrate to our eternal home?

As the gospel has been preached and the church has spread through the ages and across this globe we have brethren scattered abroad. Let's reach out to one another and to those wandering - lost and searching in God's diaspora - and share the Good News -- our Message from Home.

Jehovah God; A common bond unites your people, Jesus Christ. Help us remember our citizenship. Keep our hearts united in Him and grounded in Your everlasting kingdom as we journey here together. Amen.

The Sovereign LORD declares—
he who gathers the exiles of Israel:
"I will gather still others to them
besides those already gathered."

[Is 56:8]

A String of Hosannas

I will extol the LORD at all times;
his praise will always be on my lips.

Glorify the LORD with me;
let us exalt his name together. [
Ps 34:1, 3]

Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;
a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom. [
Ps 45:6]

How awesome is the LORD Most High,
the great King over all the earth!

For God is the King of all the earth;
sing to him a psalm of praise. [
Ps 47: 2, 7]

Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God,
be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. [
1 Tm 1:17]

A Weekly Posting of Praise from Scripture

Especially in the Night

In the night I remember your name,
O LORD,
and I will keep your law.

When your days are beset with troubles and you are alone with your thoughts past the setting of the sun, let not your mind churn nor lead you into temptation or sin. Remember the Lord. Recall His Glorious Name and all He Is. Give the Great I AM praise and He will hold You in the Light of His Word.

As darkness of the impending night approaches, it need not sway you. God's Name has holding power.

Should you see a long, dark shadow casting in your direction from another's contention -- call on the Name of the Lord.

A vacation in a mountain cabin drifts into minds-eye. I recall the waltz of the clouds' shadows wafting across the mountainside. The onsetting storm not intended for the hillside but the valley below. I watched the drama unfold from a safe distance. A storm in someone elses' life may have an indirect affect upon you but you need not run head-on into its path or get dragged needlessly into it.

If a brewing storm billows into your periphery, let His Name be your shelter -- keeping at bay that burden that is not yours to bear. Keeping you in the blessings of this day, this time. Not blowing you back into a once travelled course He has delivered you from safely already.

Watch from a distance and pray. Have the tender, compassionate heart of Christ. Be at the ready should He call you into action but when the night comes, remember His Name and He will keep you where He wants you.

I need not face the nightfall with apprehension. I am stilled by calling on His Name and moving into His truth. Mind and action arighted upon every rememberance of the attributes represented by any one of His many Names.

Receive encouragement from reminders found in His Word, dear friend,of the power in His Wonderful Name.

Each remembrance of His Name strengthens you -- even in the night. Especially in the night.

I rejoice in Your great and awesome Name [Ps 89:16]. Your Name is a Strong Tower; the righteous run to it and are safe [Pv 18:10]. May Your Name be glorified in me [2 Thes 1:12]. Amen.

Prayers of the Saints

O GOD, immortal, eternal, invisible, I remember with gladness and thanksgiving all that Thou hast been to this world of men:

Companion of the brave:
Upholder of the loyal:
Light of the wanderer:
Joy of the pilgrim:
Guide of the pioneer:
Helper of labouring men:
Refuge of the broken-hearted:
Deliverer of the oppressed:
Succour of the tempted:
Strength of the victorious:
Ruler of rulers:
Friend of the poor:
Rescuer of the perishing:
Hope of the dying.

Give me faith now to believe that Thou canst be all in all to me, according to my need, if only I renounce all proud self-dependence and put my trust in Thee.

Forbid it, O Father, that the difficulty of living well should ever tempt me to fall into any kind of heedlessness or despair. May I keep it ever in mind that this human life was once divinely lived and this world once nobly overcome and this body of flesh, that now so sorely tries me, once made into Thy perfect dwelling-place.

Show Thy lovingkindness tonight, O Lord, to all who stand in need of Thy help. Be with the weak to make them strong and with the strong to make them gentle. Cheer the lonely with Thy company and the distracted with Thy solitude. Prosper Thy Church in the fulfillment of her mighty task, and grant Thy blessing to all who have toiled today in Christ's Name. Amen.

A Diary of Private Prayer

Divine Family

Yet to all who received him [Jesus],
to those who believed in his name,
he gave the right to become children of God—
children born not of natural descent,
nor of human decision
or a husband's will,
but born of God.

I made a concious choice to live a life to please my Heavenly Father over my earthly one. Entrusting myself to Him as The Perfect Father that loves unconditionally and without fault. That is a choice I had to continue to make even after my earthly father passed from this life.

This is especially necessary if your earthly father is in moral opposition to God's standard and if his beliefs are contrary biblically. This can be an emotionally difficult decision; however, forsaking the one for The Other can break some pretty strong chains.

For one raised in a dysfunctional home (and I'm beginning to believe most of us are) it is powerful to learn the truth that in Christ I have been adopted by God into His family and made an heir of His heavenly kingdom and co-heir with Christ [Rm 8:17; Gal 4:7]. That sure changes a lot of things! But will I live like it?

It changes my views of who I am, to Whom I belong, and my standing in the church -- adding value and significance to an otherwise dismal existence. In view of this most gracious and merciful family elevation, it increases my desire to love, obey, and serve my Father and esteem the favor of my Brother.

You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus,
for all of you who were baptized into Christ
have clothed yourselves with Christ.
[Gal 3:26-27]

In the context of the Galatian's passage above, it was necessary for Paul to explain that the Gentile's in Christ had full rights to God's promise. This leveled the playing field between the Jews and Gentiles, for no longer would there be an ethnic distinction or favortism. Christ fulfilled the Abrahamic promise for God's blessing upon all nations. This adoption unites me to a larger family of brothers and sisters across every nationality. I am also to realize I am in no way inferior to another adopted sibling.

Costs must be counted in this decision, however. At times, this family association might bring suffering or even persecution [ref Jn 15:18-25; 16:33]. I am likely to receive hostility from this world with this identification. This can easily be countered with the fact that God is a Father of justice.

Consider that, as sons, God's disciplines us as such. While not always pleasant, it carries eternal blessing and is always for our good [Heb 12:4-7]. All the while remembering that He is merciful, loving, and good.

Also with this family tie comes the responsibility of family resemblance. We are called to reflect the glory of a Righteous Father. To do so requires that we daily deny ourselves and carry our cross; serving one another in love according to His example.

Finally, there is the call to consecration; living holy lives pleasing to God and striving to maintian a pure heart. Keeping in mind that the Holy Spirit makes this possible.

All this is not to say that this royal family position is to be earned. It is a gift by God's grace through the adoption price paid by none other than Jesus.

Consider each family obligation and notice how God counters each one. Would you still say yes?

We can proclaim that our Father hung the moon, knows each star by name, and is boundless. He has a huge family, a heavenly home, and is captured by the heart of a child. Our Father heals the wounds from broken families, empties tombs, raises the dead to new life, and is mighty to save. Does that not build humble confidence to go out into the world? Doesn't that fill that need of belonging? Does that not cure a lot of woes?

Would you transfer sonship from the earthly to the Godly?

Father of all Creation; In Christ, we have been reunited as family and made sons and daughters of the Most High God to love one another as You have taught. May we represent you well in this world as we use Your strength to help You gather Your children unto Yourself.

"I will be a Father to you,
and you will be my sons and daughters,
says the Lord Almighty."

God Is......

A Father's Day tribute of praise for my Heavenly Father.

There are no better words to praise God with than those God breathed. I have adapted these verses of love for our God is love:

God is patient,
God is kind.
He does not envy,
He does not boast,
He is not proud.
He is not rude,
He is not self-seeking,
He is not easily angered,
He keeps no record of wrongs.
God does not delight in evil
but rejoices with the truth.
God always protects,
always trusts,
always hopes,
always perseveres.
God never fails.

A String of Hosannas

O my Strength, I sing praise to you;
you, O God, are my fortress, my loving God.
[
Ps 59:17]

I love you, O LORD, my strength.
The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.
He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

I call to the LORD, who is worthy of praise,
and I am saved from my enemies. [
Ps 18:1-3]

I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress,
my God, in whom I trust." [
Ps 91:2]

Mightier than the thunder of the great waters,
mightier than the breakers of the sea—
the LORD on high is mighty. [
Ps 93:4]

Be exalted, O LORD, in your strength;
we will sing and praise your might. [
Ps 21:13]

Waiting To Be Found

Seek the LORD while he may be found;
call on him while he is
near.
[Is 55:6]

One living, breathing need seek the Lord.

This day, this hour, this very moment.

As long as it is the now-prior-to-His-return, seek Him. As long as you still have life, seek Him. As is commonly spoken; "Better late then never."

For in that frightening day when He can not be found or should all chances be gone, there will be unspeakable, unimagineable darkness and horror.

Heed His warnings and His Word.

Hesitant? Reluctant? He is not a stern Father that will reject you. He awaits to hear the voice of His child utter His Holy Name and seek His radiant face.

Don't delay.

It's never too late -- as long as it's not too late.

Rejoice with me in the nearness of God. Let Him be the joy of your heart and the desire of your soul. Let's pour out our thanks for His mercy to receive us.

In all the things these eyes rest upon today, may I see You, Father.

Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. [Jer 29:12-13]

A Psalm of Life

A Psalm of Life

by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
“Life is but an empty dream!”
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.

Life is real! Life is earnest;
And the grave is not its goal;
“Dust thou art, to dust returnest,”
Was not spoken of the soul.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each tomorrow
Find us farther than today.

Art is long, and time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.

In the world’s broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!

Trust no future, howe’er pleasant!
Let the dead past bury its dead!
Act – act in the living present!
Heart within, and God o’erhead!

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sand of time.

Footprints that perhaps another,
Sailing o’er life’s solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.

Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labour and to wait.

Work in Progress

One of the women decorating for VBS this week has quite a gift for balloon decorating. As she was creating these elaborate masterpieces, I observed her use of an item I’d never seen before.

Commenting on it, she explained that it was a balloon sizer. Who knew? I had no idea such a contraption existed. It’s quite a clever invention, actually. She would inflate a balloon then place it in one of the holes, depending on the size needed. The sizer would apply gentle, yet firm, pressure and she would release the excess air. This process allowed for all the balloons to be the same size.

I’ve got to say this struck a familiar chord with me, as I have been sensing the firm Hand of God upon me of late. A gentle, steady pressure. An indication to me of a work He was attempting to do in me.

I believe that God’s main goal in a believer is sanctification. As He continually forms Christ in me, there are times when I get off track, requiring Him to recapture my attention. When I am not doing as I should and He tries to bring me back into alignment. This is such a time.

Obviously He wasn’t getting my attention or my full cooperation. (Must be all this busy-ness!) Thankfully He persisted in His pursuit, applying a new approach sure to get my notice.

Still lacking full understanding, however, I began searching His heart. Questions needed to be asked – and answered. Is it a particular sin? Either by commission or omission? A habit? Lack of discipline? Something was not as it should be, no doubt.

I trust His judgment and His lead. I know that whatever He is trying to accomplish it is for my good.

Now that He has my attention, I humbly pray; “Draw me closer; higher. Give me a pliable heart with eyes wide-open and ears fine-tuned.”

I wait for direction. At first I sense withdrawal, distance. I continue to seek direction – waiting in prayer.

I am entirely dependent upon Him for the answers, the resources, and the ability. Only He can accomplish in me what is lacking. Only He can realign to His perfect will.

He has been faithful to show me my sin and the errors of my ways. I confess, in undeniable agreement, as my faults loom larger than life. “Yes, Lord. I see now.”

He’s absolutely right – as always! Pressure lifted. Squeeze eased. Like that balloon, I’ve been resized. Filled with His Spirit then squeezing out what doesn’t belong. Expelling the excess that is unnecessary to form His creative masterpiece. A work still in progress.

Father God; I want to be cooperative, agreeable, willing, obedient to conform. Possess me. Seize hold of me that I might not miss what You have to teach me. Mold me and make me and forgive me when you don’t have my full attention and I’m not doing as I should. In Christ name I pray. Amen.

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world,
but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Then you will be able to
test and approve what God's will is—
his good, pleasing and perfect will.

A String of Hosannas

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
his love endures forever. [Ps 107:1]

The LORD is gracious and righteous;
our God is full of compassion.
The LORD protects the simplehearted;
when I was in great need, he saved me.

Be at rest once more, O my soul,
for the LORD has been good to you.

For you, O LORD, have delivered my soul from death,
my eyes from tears,
my feet from stumbling,
that I may walk before the LORD
in the land of the living. [Ps 116:5-9]

The LORD lives! Praise be to my Rock!
Exalted be God my Savior!

Therefore I will praise you among the nations, O LORD;
I will sing praises to your name. [Ps 18:46, 49]

A Verse for the Road

"For the LORD your God
is the one who goes with you
to fight for you
against your enemies
to give you victory." [Dt 20:4]

As we head out into this new day, filled with unknown challenges, tuck this verse in your heart-pocket. Take along this reminder as encouragement from God, should a need arise - your own or someone elses'.

We never know what lies in the immediate span of time we earthlings call today. Who is to know what awaits us on the other side of that door? When you walk through that door, walk out in spiritual victory.

You may be facing a routine day or one filled with stressers. Whatever the plan it certainly has potential to change unexpectedly along the way. As you venture out, do so in faith and in step with Christ. Being built up in the inmost places.

Fortify those vulnerable places prone to attack with God's Word; be it temptation (in all its disguises), personal attack, or worldly influence. Then, come what may, you are reminded; "The Lord is with you."

The world wails; the flesh fights; the enemy entices. Battles rage at any bend. But walking with the Lord means ultimate victory. His invincible power trumps every foe of our faith. We must head out prepared.

So, pick up your purse .......
.......and a Verse.......
.......and embark on the great unknown.

Watch for fellow travelers in need of a boost along the way.

Victorious Lord; Prepare me for what lies ahead this day and when I hit an unexpected bump in the road give me wisdom and faith. Thank You for Your fortifying Word that builds up my faith and prepares my mind for every occasion. Amen.

Going to War

When you go to war against your enemies and see horses and chariots and an army greater than yours, do not be afraid of them, because the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt, will be with you. When you are about to go into battle, the priest shall come forward and address the army. He shall say: "Hear, O Israel, today you are going into battle against your enemies. Do not be fainthearted or afraid; do not be terrified or give way to panic before them. For the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory." [Dt 20:1-4]

Resting in Brokenness

In Your quiet embrace, Father
I am at peace
Quiet
Unafraid

A ray of light reveals a crack
Cracks that need tending
Examining
Healing

Fragile souls fractured
Pain inflicted by those
Trusted to love
Meant to protect

Wounds never voiced
Buried deep in darkness
Thought forgotten

On my own these broken places
Remain hidden
Denied
Camoflauged

Wounds never acknowledged
Lurk in shadows
Ready to pounce in retaliation
Passed on to the unsuspecting

God knows they're there
Each and every one
The how
The who

Healing comes with communion
Communion with God
Full of compassion
Full of grace

In this Safe Place confess brokenness
Release and receive His healing
Be made whole
Wholly His

His healing balm brings freedom
Freedom to let go
Free to move on
Free to forgive

I bless You for each fragment, Abba
Give thanks for Your healing
Hope in the outcome

Thank You, Lord, for bringing me to this place
A blessed place in You of
Soul-surrendered trust
Enlightenment
Formation
Healing
Rest

He heals the brokenhearted
and binds up their wounds.

Showers of Grace

Lord, don’t let me rush unleashed
Like the down-pouring rain
A harsh, wild torrent
Beating down, assaulting every surface
Causing destruction
Eroding fertile soil
Gushing forth only to run off
Washing away with little benefit

Rather, let me settle calm and gentle
Like a soft and steady shower
A mild, graceful touch
Loving caress, nurturing creation
Bringing refreshment and life
Encouraging new growth
Soaking in deep

Adorning God’s luscious greenery and fruit
