Praise~Bites

"Praise be
to the God and Father
of our Lord Jesus Christ!
In his great mercy
he has given us
new birth into a living hope
through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—
kept in heaven
for you,
who through faith
are shielded by God's power
until the coming of the salvation
that is ready to be revealed
in the last time."

Thoughts on the Ascension

e⋅piph⋅a⋅ny -noun
  1. sudden perception, realization.

I love those rare, electrifying moments of illumination when the brain fires and births a new perception. The forefront of our mind connects to something tucked in the deep recesses and draws it into our awareness. A new thought is born.

That's what happened to me as I meditated on the Ascension. Imagine the most profound visual effects of a sunburst in the cosmos when Jesus blasted through the atmosphere and returned to rejoicing angels and a waiting Father.

But I digress for that was not the thought I intended to convey. It's just added imagery that's occurring as I tap on these lettered keys.

First, a disclaimer. This is purely my uneducated opinion and an unsubstantiated thought. Now, let's see if I can explain this and make verbal sense out of it.

This particular epiphany is regarding Jesus as the Son of Man. Jesus was born to earth from heaven in the incarnation as the Son of God. Could it be that He was reborn to heaven from earth in the ascension as the Son of Man?

When I say Son of God, be careful to understand that I am not referring to the essence of God that is the Son of the Trinity from eternity.

"Son of Man" is a phrase that teaches us and helps us remember that Jesus can identify with our humanity. I am wondering if there is an added dimension that I have never quite grasped of Jesus as Son of Man. I have always assumed that it was a name given to Him that refers to the fact that He was born of Mary and that He was a descendant of Adam. What if it's more than a title or name but an attribute? Something He attained?

Is it possible that He truly became the Son of Man when He returned in glory, resurrected, to the Father? When He ascended from earth, reborn into the eternity of the heavens, did He become the fulfillment of this essence?

Oh, the riches.....Oh, the depth....Oh, the complex intrigue of our Savior and our God! Who can fathom the mysteries of God? Who can probe the limits of the Almighty? [Jb 11:7]

"But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God."[Lk 22:69]

All wisdom is Yours, Omniscient God. All praise is Yours, Perfect Lord. All wonder is Yours, Holy Spirit. My understanding is limited and my comprehension puny, but I believe. You were born and lived as Son of Man and Son of God to save us and You ascended in glory and are enthroned at the right hand of the Father. That is knowledge enough for me. The sign that I know You is love. Turn what I know into love, like the water to wine, poured out for You. In Jesus Name, Amen.

That Saturday

Saturday, as we tooled around town joyfully celebrating my nephew's birthday, that Sabbath day so long ago frequently entered my mind. I could not help but consider the state of the eleven disciples even in a flurry of activity. My mind would suddenly be drawn back in time to that dreadful day when all hope was lost; dreams shattered; joy vanquished.

That had to be the longest day in all of history. That interminable Saturday between the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. As Jesus lay in the tomb (in silence - darkness - death) the disciples lingered in their mourning. Numb in the aftermath of the impossible.

I found myself frequently giving thanks that I am living in this post-resurrection period. But am I really? Living, that is. Do I live like the resurrection has already happened or do I live like it were that awful Saturday all over again?

Can you imagine living in a world without Jesus? Can you fathom the expectations of a nation that has waited thousands of years for the fulfillment of a promise, only to seemingly fail? One day you witness the miraculous powers of a man you believe to be God's Messiah and now he lays lifeless. And what was Lazarus thinking?

Saturday my life and plans happily carried on because I knew the celebrating that awaited me Sunday. And now here we are. Living in the advent. Waiting for our Lord - but in a whole different way. Thankfully. In Christ, we know what to believe and Whom to believe.

Father God; I am so thankful to live in a world where Jesus lives - in the victory, joy, and hope of a post-resurrection era. Help me to remember to live like it. Help me to live in the light and power of that Resurrection Sunday as opposed to the seeming darkness and defeat of Crucifixion Friday. Keep our faith and our hope alive and alert in these days of waiting. In the name of our Risen Lord, Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.

Memorialize the Living Lord

After saying this, he [Jesus] was taken up into a cloud while they were watching, and they could no longer see him. As they strained to see him rising into heaven, two white-robed men suddenly stood among them. “Men of Galilee,” they said, “why are you standing here staring into heaven? Jesus has been taken from you into heaven, but someday he will return from heaven in the same way you saw him go!”

More good news of Jesus Christ is given to us here in these verses. The Good News of Jesus began with an angel's pronouncement of His coming and it ends with one of Him leaving - temporarily. This was not to be "good-bye." It is merely a "see you later."

Until then, we are not to stand staring into heaven. Watching, yes. Waiting, yes. But surely not standing still gazing at the clouds.

He has given us very specific instructions. He has given us all a part to live out faithfully. And as we do, we rememeber the events that surround the basis for the Easter holiday. We memorialize the One Who Lives.

Weekly we celebrate the Christ by observing the communion He instituted. This was given that we will proclaim Him until He returns. We remember and celebrate the promises and deeds of His life, death, and resurrection. By it we look forward in hope and assurance to that glorious day when we will share the cup with Him Who Gave It All for eternity.

For whenever you eat this bread
and drink this cup,
you proclaim the Lord's death
until he comes.

Thank You for leaving the blessed ceremonial cup as a symbol by which we proclaim Your death until Your coming. May we rise up and proclaim You and give You honor and praise. May the breaking of bread and taking of the cup open our eyes as it did those disciples traveling to Emmaus. Today, Lord, I memorialize the Living.

Believing the Resurrection

.... if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord,"
and
believe in your heart that
God raised him from the dead,
you will be saved.
[Rm 10:9 emph added]

Do you see that "and" in there? Believing in the resurrection is imperative. It is a crucial part of our faith in Jesus Christ as Savior of the world.

That was the one obstruction blinding the Emmaus-bound men. Dreams shattered and despairing, they shuffled down that dusty road of defeat. So dejected were they, they were not able to listen closely to that familiar voice. They would not be ready for revelation until they believed the resurrection.

Jesus is risen. We must ascribe that miraculous power to God and realize that is a vital part of Christ's work and victory.

Peter has written that we have been born into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus. How can one have living hope in a dead savior? Our hope is living because our Hope is Alive!

The resurrection of our Lord is indisputable. It cannot be disproven and should not be disbelieved.

Allow me to share this compelling quote:

"The bottom line is that approving opinions about Jesus' life miss the point unless married to joyous belief in His resurrection. Reverence, however sincere, for a dead Christ, however noble, will do nothing for a sinner headed toward a lost eternity." Stuart Briscoe

Do you stake your life on His resurrection? Your own resurrection?

My Risen Christ and Lord; My Jesus is alive in glory! You are the Resurrection and Life and I give you praise! You are the Firstfruit to arise and we await the harvest. You have rolled the stone away from the tomb of death unto life and I choose to believe. Yes, Jesus lives! He lives, indeed!

"and if Christ has not been raised,
your faith is worthless;
you are still in your sins."
[1 Cor 15:17]

Hymn for Easter

Death cannot keep its prey,
Jesus my Savior,
He tore the bars away,
Jesus my Lord!

Up from the grave He arose,
With a mighty triumph o'er His foes;
He arose a victor from the dark domain,
And He lives forever,
With His saints to reign.

He arose!
He arose!
Hallelujah!
Christ arose!

Up From The Grave He Arose

Selected Verses for Easter Worship

The Supremacy of Christ
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation— if you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven,

Praise to God for a Living Hope
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you,

Chrysostom's Easter Sermon

Is there anyone who is a devout lover of God?

Let them enjoy this beautiful bright festival!

Is there anyone who is a grateful servant?

Let them rejoice and enter into the joy of their Lord!

Are there any weary with fasting?

Let them now receive their wages!

If any have toiled from the first hour, let them receive their due reward; If any have come after the third hour, let him with gratitude join in the Feast!

And he that arrived after the sixth hour, let him not doubt; for he too shall sustain no loss.

And if any delayed until the ninth hour, let him not hesitate; but let him come too.

And he who arrived only at the eleventh hour, let him not be afraid by reason of his delay.

For the Lord is gracious and receives the last even as the first.

He gives rest to him that comes at the eleventh hour, as well as to him that toiled from the first.

To this one He gives, and upon another He bestows.

He accepts the works as He greets the endeavor.

The deed He honors and the intention He commends.

Let us all enter into the joy of the Lord!

First and last alike receive your reward; rich and poor, rejoice together!

Sober and slothful, celebrate the day!

You that have kept the fast, and you that have not, rejoice today for the Table is richly laden!

Feast royally on it, the calf is a fatted one.

Let no one go away hungry. Partake, all, of the cup of faith.

Enjoy all the riches of His goodness!

Let no one grieve at his poverty, for the universal kingdom has been revealed.

Let no one mourn that he has fallen again and again; for forgiveness has risen from the grave.

Let no one fear death, for the Death of our Savior has set us free.

He has destroyed it by enduring it.

He destroyed Hades when He descended into it.

He put it into an uproar even as it tasted of His flesh.

Isaiah foretold this when he said,
"You, O Hell, have been troubled by encountering Him below."

Hell was in an uproar because it was done away with.

It was in an uproar because it is mocked.

It was in an uproar, for it is destroyed.

It is in an uproar, for it is annihilated.

It is in an uproar, for it is now made captive.

Hell took a body, and discovered God.

It took earth, and encountered Heaven.

It took what it saw, and was overcome by what it did not see.

O death, where is thy sting?

O Hades, where is thy victory?

Christ is Risen, and you, o death, are annihilated!

Christ is Risen, and the evil ones are cast down!

Christ is Risen, and the angels rejoice!

Christ is Risen, and life is liberated!

Christ is Risen, and the tomb is emptied of its dead; for Christ having risen from the dead, is become the first-fruits of those who have fallen asleep.

To Him be Glory and Power forever and ever. Amen!

The Easter Sermon of John Chrysostom
Pastor of Constantinople (~400 AD)

Hymn for Good Friday

O love divine, what hast Thou done!
The immortal God hath died for me.
The Father's co-eternal Son
bore all my sins upon the tree.
Th' immortal God for me hath died:
My Lord, my Love, is crucified.

Is crucified for me and you,
To bring us rebels back to God.
Believe, believe the record true,
Ye all are bought with Jesus’ blood.
Pardon for all flows from His side:
My Lord, my Love, is crucified!

Behold and love, ye that pass by,
The bleeding Prince of life and peace!
Come, sinners, see your Savior die,
And say, “Was ever grief like His?”
Come, feel with me His blood applied:
My Lord, my Love, is crucified!

Then let us sit beneath His cross,
And gladly catch the healing stream:
All things for Him account but loss,
And give up all our hearts to Him:
Of nothing think or speak beside,
My Lord, my Love, is crucified!

Tetelestai

".....knowing that all was now completed....."

[Jn 19:28 emph added, partial]

Completed.

All was completed in its entirety.

The work of redemption done.

All He came to do, all He came to suffer was over.

Everything that had been planned, everything that had been foretold had come to pass in complete and perfect obedience to the Father.

Jesus said, "It is finished."

[Jn 19:30 partial]

"Tetelestai"

Aramaic translation; "It is finished."

Accomplished.

Salvation acquired and secured.

Nothing more is left to be done. Need proof?

Look no further than the thief on the neighboring cross.

Jesus did not give him a list of requirements; deeds to perform perfectly; rites of passage to fulfill. No new commands were given. They'd already been spoken.

With His last breath He declared victory; "It is finished." Words of comfort and encouragement - for Him and for us.

He declared the debt of sin paid in full.

The penalty of sin is satisfied completely.

The requirement of the law has been fulfilled.

The perfect sacrifice made. The Lamb of God had taken away the sins of the world just as John the Baptist prophecied.

With that,

he bowed his head

and gave up his spirit

[Jn 19:30 emph added, partial]

Jesus gave up His life. He entrusted Himself into the hands of His God and Abba Father. His life was not taken - it was given. Freely of His own will and design. He chose to release His spirit.

All has been given. All has been done. Now He is waiting.

Waiting for your answer.

Will you pick up your cross and follow the way of our Lord? Will you be crucified with Him? Accept His offer of eternal fellowship? Nail your sins to the cross. Put that old sinful life to death. Give Him your spirit. Entrust your soul into His Hands. God is ready, willing, and able to extend His grace as it is written:

Since he did not spare

even his own Son

but gave him up for us all,

won’t He also give us everything else?

[Romans 8:32 NLT]

Thanks be to God for this indescribable gift. Praise, Lord Jesus, I have nothing but praise. While my heart is sorrowful, for the Divine One I love has suffered so, I echo by faith; "Tetelestai!"

Quotes about the Cross of Christ

Contemplative Thoughts:

"The cross is a picture of violence, yet the key to peace, a picture of suffering, yet the key to healing, a picture of death, yet the key to life."

~ David Watson

"This one event of the cross of Christ is the final revelation both of the character and consequence of human sin and of the wonder and sacrifice of divine love."

~Alan Stibbs

"The cross is where God forgave His children without lowering His standards."

~Max Lucado

"The Biblical gospel of atonement is of God satisfying Himself by substituting Himself for us."

~John R. W. Stott

"The Lord Needs Them"

On the first day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus' disciples asked him, Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?"

So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, "Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. Say to the owner of the house he enters, 'The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?' [Mk 14:12-14]

What of yours might the Lord use today?

Jesus had need of a donkey to ride into Jerusalem. Do you think the foal's owner was expecting the opportunity of a lifetime that day?

Jesus had need of a room for a final, holy meal. Do you think the man carrying water anticipated a tap on his shoulder in the middle of such a typical chore?

And what of the homeowner? I doubt He was planning that the Lord would be a houseguest that day.

All three of these common men were merely going about the usual routine of their day. Suddenly they were given an opportunity to be used of Christ.

In the course of our regular routine is kingdom potential. Possible opportunities to allow God to use what we have for the kingdom of Christ. They were called out from ordinariness.

It is imperative that we have eyes to see, ears to hear, minds to perceive, and wills that are flexible should our lives be interrupted by God. Yes, even those simple chores that seem so menial.

There is no task too small to be used for God. Whatever appearance of commonality our efforts may have, they all have the potential to instantly be transformed from the ordinary to the extraordinary. Are you available to be a blessing to the Lord today?

Dear God; Make use of me, my possessions, my gifts, my days. They are Yours. Help me to remember that nothing is insignificant with You.

Change of Heart

Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching, and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus, for they were afraid of the people. Then Satan entered Judas, called Iscariot, one of the Twelve. And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. They were delighted and agreed to give him money. He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present. [Lk 22:1-6]

How often have we shared the cup of communion with Christ on Sunday to deny Him by Friday? Or even by Monday? In a matter of days we have a change of heart.

It's quite possible some of those laying down their cloaks on the Sunday Jesus rode into Jerusalem were yelling "Crucify Him" on Friday. Or maybe they just stood at a distance. Neutral. Obtuse. Uncommitted. Maybe not clear-cut treachery as the betrayal of a friend with a kiss; however, it's not the worship and devotion claimed earlier.

"Death and Destruction lie open before the LORD—
how much more the hearts of men!"

The actions of Judas clearly demonstrates that now matter how close we follow Jesus, no matter what we witness of Him personally, and irrelevent to how long we have been in fellowship with Him, not everyone will genuinely accept Him and truly commit for life.

Judas betrayed Jesus, Peter denied Him, others scattered and hid when the pressure was on. It is one grave thing to turn away from Jesus. But may we always remember that the heart that turns away can also turn back toward.

Judas died in his state of enmity. Peter repented and died a saint. Which would you determine to be?

We have a tremedous advantage: Revelation. We know the end of the story. We live this side of Resurrection Sunday. We live this side of Pentecost. They knew none of these. We know that the destroyers plans failed. We have the hope of God's promise. We have read what He has done. We have the courage, strength, empowerment to endure from the Almighty Holy Spirit.

But we also know what God teaches about the hearts of men. We are to be very cautious and aware that we are as easily enticed and tempted as Judas.

Human hearts have a tendency to change. That is our both our threat and our hope.

Blessed Holy Spirit; Purify my heart. Make me steadfast in my faith. Bear the fruit of faithfulness. Breathe on me to live purposefully, emphatically, always for Jesus. Amen.

This is what the LORD says:
"Cursed is the one who trusts in man,
who depends on flesh for his strength
and whose heart turns away from the LORD.

The Sword of Christ

Yes, Jesus rode into Jerusalem peacefully, riding a humble donkey, bringing salvation. But He came wielding a sword. After clearing the temple, He withdrew His Sword of Truth.

He made my mouth like a sharpened sword,
in the shadow of his hand he hid me;
he made me into a polished arrow
and concealed me in his quiver.

[Is 49:2]

These truths He directed at the religious leaders. He leveled stern rebukes against their sins and duplicity. He did not back down even though He knew full well their hearts intent to kill Him. Neither was He concerned with popularity. He boldly confronted their corruption for He was well aware that time was of the essence.

"...for this I came into the world,
to testify to the truth.
Everyone on the side of truth listens to me."

~Jesus

In Matthew 23 Jesus delivers eight sharp "Woe to you..." statements to the religious elite. Five times He called them "blind fools." He also called them "hypocrites," "snakes," and a "brood of vipers". This intense confrontation was necessary to breech the fortified walls they had built up around their hearts - and God.

This tirade ensured retribution. But souls were at stake and that is precisely what He came to save.

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
[
Heb 4:12]

Truth that cuts deep has two potential responses; repentance or rebellion. With the threat of losing their power and position, most chose the later - all the while hiding under the guise of peace-keeping and law-protecting. This reproof fueled the flame of resentment for destruction rather than truth-acceptance.

My hope in this lesson is that one on-looker present that day took heed and repented. I know His words of truth spoken in these passages have for me. What about you?

Dear God of Truth; I praise Your All-Powerful Word. I praise You for Your indisputable truth. May the words of Christ always prick and mold my heart. May they bring about awareness, acceptance, and change. May I be a careful steward to use Your Word wisely, properly, and truthfully; bringing others closer to You. In Christ Holy Name I pray. Amen.

Temple Cleansing

On reaching Jerusalem,
Jesus entered the temple area
and began driving out those who
were buying and selling there.
He overturned the tables of the money changers
and the benches of those selling doves,
and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise
through the temple courts.
And as he taught them, he said, "Is it not written:
" 'My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations'?
But you have made it a den of robbers."

Want a good spring cleaning? A real soul cleansing? Let Jesus ride into the heart of religiosity amidst shouts of praise and clear the temple. Tossing aside our junk and clutter.

It is good to remember that our God is a jealous God. Twice Jesus cleared the Temple (at the beginning and at the end of His earthly ministry). In righteous meekness (power under control, handled rightly and with godly purpose) He taught the people to keep God's house of prayer pure and undefiled.

This spring season of Easter, let's invite Him to show us the commercialism and the extraneous that need removal from our hearts.

Lord Jesus; Cleanse this temple of robbers. Drive out the thieves that pillage and plunder Your praise, Your peace, Your purity. Remove the litter of worldliness, the clutter that crowds You out. Turn up the heat and remove the dross -- the impurities added that steal away a holy sacrifice of worship. Reclaim it as a house of prayer, filled with Your presence. Generate such zeal for my Father's house that others may freely have access without burden. May our practices be pure and pleasing to You. Amen.
Do you not know
that your body is a temple
of the Holy Spirit,
who is in you,
whom you have received from God?

Royal Welcome

Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion!
Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
righteous and having salvation,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

I will take away the chariots from Ephraim
and the war-horses from Jerusalem,
and the battle bow will be broken.
He will proclaim peace to the nations.
His rule will extend from sea to sea
and from the River to the ends of the earth.

[Zec 9:9-10]

Jesus came in peace as the prophesied Messiah. He rode in on a gentle donkey, bringing salvation.

He knew He came to a fickle crowd that would turn on Him in a matter of days. But today He was welcomed and celebrated in a grand victory parade.

"To wave a palm branch in first-century Palestine would be like waving the Stars and Stripes in colonial Boston or shouting "Remember the Alamo!" in old Texas."
~Thomas G. Long

The Hope of the Ages had finally arrived. Jesus was finally receiving the honor He was due (although short-lived).

Today, also is a day to celebrate Jesus. To lift up our Hosannas and declare Him King.

All glory, laud, and honor
To Thee, Redeemer, King,
To whom the lips of children
Made sweet hosannas ring;
Thou art the King of Israel,
Thou David's royal Son,
Who in the Lord's name comest,
The King and blessed one!

~Theodulph of Orleans

Come, Lord, enter our hearts as we raise our palms of worship. We crown You King. We praise You with Hosannas, for You did come to save. May all glory be Yours forevermore. Amen

When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:

"Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!"
"Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"
[Lk 29:37-38]

A Day for Reflection

As Jesus has asked, and every man must one day answer. . . .

Prepare ~ Probe ~ Ponder ~ Praise

I pause ~ probe ~ ponder ~ praise ~ prepare my heart, mind, soul, Lord, for a holy week of remembrance.

A Personal Anointing

Here a dinner was given in Jesus' honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus' feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.

This week, let us not be stingy in our worship of Jesus. Let us remember arightly that He was not stingy. He poured Himself out for us. He is lavish in His love, His grace, His forgiveness, His goodness. Freely, extravagantly we have been given. Let us, in turn, anoint Him with genuine love, adoration, and thankfulness as did Mary.

Jesus has done so very much for me. And not just as written in the pages of His Most Holy Word but in the realty of my life. Oh, dear reader, if you only knew....

Withdraw into your most private place and pour yourself out to the Lord. Anoint Him generously with praise, adoration, and thanks.

I bow before You, my Lord and King, here in my Bethany. I fill this humble temple with the fragrant perfume of worship of my most generous Savior. May Your Spirit within - the costliest of gifts - overflow as a fragrant offering...........

Most Compassionate Lord Jesus

Continuing in our heart preparations leading up to Holy Week, let us consider the compassion of the Christ from the cross. Even then it was unceasing.

The Gospels record several incidents where Jesus was moved by His compassion for the multitudes and how mercifully He responded. He demonstrated His tender heart toward them time and again.

But now, seeing them at their worst and abused mercilessly, wouldn't the withdrawal of such tender feelings be justified ~ understandable?

His concern for others in immense suffering did not diminish. He lived His command that consideration of others above yourself is not based upon their treatment or behavior.

"A large number of people followed him, including
women who mourned and wailed for him. Jesus turned and said to them, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children."

Kept up all night, withstanding six mock trials, ridiculed, pummeled, hungry, and weak, He attempts to carry His cross to Golgotha's Hill. And yet He still cared enough to warn the people of Jerusalem of their future lot.

Of the seven last words of Christ, four were loving words of compassion. One for the masses; one for a crucified criminal; one for His mother and dear friend; and the last for all humanity:

  • "Jesus said, 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.'"[Lk 23:34]
  • "Jesus answered him, 'I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.'"[Lk 23:43]
  • "...he said to his mother, 'Dear woman, here is your son,' and to the disciple, 'Here is your mother.'" [Jn 19:26-27]
  • When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. [Jn 19:30]

If I experience the least discomfort, whether afflicted or inflicted pain, I'm consumed with self. Intently focused inward and hardly aware of anyone around me. Not Jesus, our Lord. His compassion is consistent. It is not based on conditions or circumstances. Here He hangs, suspended in the air on an instrument of torture, mocked and ridiculed, and yet.......

And yet He loves. And yet He cares. And yet He bears it in compassion for our lost souls. His mercies never fail.

Most Compassionate Lord Jesus; In Your darkest hour You looked upon those You came to save and showed compassion. You remained concerned for others through it all. Help me to live in like manner. May I learn by Your perfect example to consistently and unconditionally show others compassion. Give me Your heart for those You love. May I never doubt Your character and attribute of unceasing compassion for us. Amen.
