Creation's Autumn Song

The weather’s a'changin’, so are the trees
Such beauty in autumn and cool in the breeze

God’s paintbrush is loaded with colors anew
To dazzle the eyes and adorn our view

Days of full bloom have drawn to a close
Diminishing glamour in the garden’s rows

Bird-songs quiet, rustling leaves crescendo
Wildlife sets pace to an unwritten motto

Nourishment gleaned by God’s summer-grace
Are stored deep in the roots for a timely release

Saving much needed strength in all of nature
To endure on-setting storms to the praise of their Maker

The Intrigue of God

During the Lord's Supper in worship service yesterday morning I was given a thought of the parallel typology of portions of the lives of Joseph and Jesus. Now, bear with me as I lay the groundwork.

There is much in the Old Testament that foreshadows the New. Many of the historical accounts are a foretelling of God's mystery that were to be revealed in Christ. I believe it also provides continuity between the two Books.

These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. [Col 2:17]

These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us,on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come. [1 Cor 10:11]

Keep in mind that the definition of foreshadow is "a sign of something to come" or "indicated beforehand". Think of some of the symbolism used in Revelation in reference to the coming events as foretold by Jesus.

Just a few of the Old Testament examples of foreshadowing that come to my mind are:

  • I personally draw a parallel at the rebuke of God to Abel at the murder of Cain when He said that the earth cried out to Him for his blood spilled upon it [Gn 4:10]. The earthquake at the death of God's Only, Firstborn Son upon the Cross comes to my mind [Mt 27:50-51].

  • Another supposition of mine is the propitiation God required to cover Moses' disobedience of Covenant by the blood of Moses' firstborn son [Ex 4:24ff].

  • The Exodus account has several, to be sure. One of the most obvious is the protection of the blood of the lamb that diverted death and so the judgment of God would pass over the home of the Jew [Ex 12].

  • Another from the same event is the deliverance of the slaves to freedom as to the salvation of the Messiah that rescues man from the slavery of sin [Ex 12:31ff].

  • The sacrifice of Jacob's first-born son, Isaac, where God provided the scapegoat [Gen 22].

  • The Tabernacle as to the Church and the Temple as to the modern-day believer in Jesus as the Christ.

  • Jonah spent three days in Sheol (the belly of the whale) and was given back his life. Another would be that he was buried and raised upon confession and repentance[Jnh 2].

  • The hidden meaning of Old Testament foreshadowing equivalent to the Parables of Jesus that also contained hidden meaning.

  • Could I even go so far as to say Jesus conceived of the Holy Spirit is a foreshadowing of the birth of the new creation in man by the Holy Spirit upon baptism?

The new thought that I have meditated upon is the occurrence when Joseph's brothers plotted to kill him and tossed him into a cistern to be left for dead. As I thought of Jesus as he lay in the dark, lifeless tomb, I imagined Joseph. Consider it a form of entombment. Rejected by his own, he was then drawn up from the dark pit and into the marvelous light, and went on to save his people. Parallel to the saved, he was purchased at a price, became a servant, never to be the same again. [Gen 37:23ff] He finally reached maturity to accept his lot in life as God's good [Gen 50:20]after he was able to forgive the wrong inflicted on him by his family.

God's Word is rich with intrigue and in His omniscience He provides the Holy Spirit for perception, understanding, and conviction.

Dive in - The Word has the power to save!

Omniscient God and Lord Jesus, the Word-Made-Flesh; I praise Your sovereignty and give thanks for Your flawless plan of salvation and Your eternal word. May it sweep the globe as a consuming fire, igniting the minds of all to believe. In Jesus Name, Amen.

but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit.

The Spirit searches all things,

even the deep things of God.

A String of Hosannas

Blessed be your glorious name, and may it be exalted above all blessing and praise. You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it,
the seas and all that is in them.
You give life to everything,
and the multitudes of heaven worship you. [Neh 9:5b-6]

You, O LORD, sit enthroned forever;
your renown endures through all generations. [Ps 102:12]

The LORD reigns, let the earth be glad;
let the distant shores rejoice.
Clouds and thick darkness surround him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. Fire goes before him and consumes his foes on every side. His lightning lights up the world;
the earth sees and trembles.
The mountains melt like wax before the LORD,
before the Lord of all the earth.
The heavens proclaim his righteousness,
and all the peoples see his glory. [Ps 97:1-6]

Be exalted, O LORD, in your strength;
we will sing and praise your might. [Ps 21:13]

The heavens praise your wonders, O LORD, your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones. For who in the skies above can compare with the LORD ? Who is like the LORD among the heavenly beings? In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; he is more awesome than all who surround him. O LORD God Almighty, who is like you? You are mighty, O LORD, and your faithfulness surrounds you. [Ps 89:5-8]

Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting.
Amen and Amen. [Ps 41:13]

Prayers of the Saints

"Give us grace, Almighty Father,
so to pray, as to deserve to be heard,
to address Thee with our hearts,
as with our lips.
.
Thou art everywhere present,
from Thee no secret can be hid.
May the knowledge of this,
teach us to fix our thoughts on Thee,
with reverence and devotion that we pray not in vain.
.
Look with mercy on the sins we have this day committed,
and in mercy make us feel them deeply,
that our repentance may be sincere, and our resolution steadfast
of endeavouring against the commission of such in future.
.
Teach us to understand the sinfulness of our own hearts,
and bring to our knowledge every fault of temper
and every evil habit in which we have indulged
to the discomfort of our fellow-creatures,
and the danger of our own souls.
.
May we now, and on each return of night,
consider how the past day has been spent by us,
what have been our prevailing thoughts,
words, and actions during it,
and how far we can acquit ourselves of evil.
.
Have we thought irreverently of Thee,
have we disobeyed Thy commandments,
have we neglected any known duty,
or willingly given pain to any human being?
.
Incline us to ask our hearts these questions, O God,
and save us from deceiving ourselves by pride or vanity.
.
Give us a thankful sense of the blessings in which we live,
of the many comforts of our lot;
that we may not deserve to lose them
by discontent or indifference.
.
Be gracious to our necessities, and guard us,
and all we love, from evil this night.
.
May the sick and afflicted, be now, and ever Thy care;
and heartily do we pray for the safety
of all that travel by land or by sea,
for the comfort and protection of the orphan and widow
and that Thy pity may be shewn upon all captives and prisoners.
.
Above all other blessings, O God,
for ourselves, and our fellow-creatures,
we implore Thee to quicken our sense of
Thy mercy in the redemption of the World,
of the value of that holy religion
in which we have been brought up,
that we may not, by our own neglect,
throw away the salvation Thou has given us,
nor be Christians only in name.
.
Hear us Almighty God, for His sake who has redeemed us,
and taught us thus to pray:
Our Father which are in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name.
Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil:
for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen."

Nehemiah ~ A Man For All Seasons

I have long admired the great man of prayer and encouragement, Nehemiah. Upon closer examination, one also realizes that he was not only the king's subject, God's servant, or even a minister of the repatriates, he was a great political leader.

At such a time as this, America sure could use one such as he. Not only does this character model a leader for our government, but in our churches as well. He led the wayward exiles to confession, hearing and obeying God's word, recommittment to covenant, and spiritual renewal.

The "gracious hand of God was upon him" [Neh 2:18] as he systematically set about successful reformation. The text records a list of roles beyond builder that he filled in the span of this major reconstruction - all the while dependent on God through prayer.
  • Intercessor (4:4ff)
  • Defender (5:6ff; 13:6 ff)
  • Host and Quartermaster (5:17ff)
  • Registrar (7:5ff)
  • Govenor (8:9)
  • Sabbath-Guard (13:15ff)
  • Priest-Purifier (13:28ff)

That's alot of hats to wear! What I find remarkable is that after about 12 years of working and leading this rebuilding project, he humbly returned to serve the King once more.

I sense from the text that the atmosphere of the environment at this time was super-charged by the very Spirit of God. I want that for America. Would you join me on behalf of our country in confession by borrowing on the words Nehemiah prayed?

O LORD, God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and obey his commands, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your [people of America]. I confess the sins we [Americans], including myself and my father's house, have committed against you. We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses. They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand. O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. [Neh 1:5-7, 10-11a adapted]

Raise up for us leaders such a Nehemiah in this day, Lord. Bring about renewal to honor the sacred covenenant of Christ for Your name sake and for Your glory. In Jesus our Lord, Amen.

Remember This Old Tree

A stately tree stood by the stream
Where sparkling waters flowed,
Her trunk was gnarled and badly scarred,
Her branches deeply bowed.

For many years she'd stayed the storms,
Withstood the windy blasts,
Her roots, sunk deep beneath the soil,
Tenaciously held fast.

At times she swayed so furiously
She thought her boughs would break;
The winds did heave her to and fro,
The ground did firmly shake.

Yet further down her roots did grow,
Her anchor firmly set,
She raised her branches to the sky
Her praises to beget.

For each new storm that came her way
Forced her to take strong hold,
And all the trials and stormy blasts
Caused her to grow fourfold.

When winds of tribulation blow,
Our faith takes root and grows;
And when shaken by life's trials,
God's strength He then bestows.

So when the trials of life befall,
Remember this old tree;
And thank God for each storm that comes
Which serves to strengthen thee

Hebrews Call to Hope

The Hebrew writer repeatedly emphasizes the importance of maintained faith and hope. In fact, he uses the word “hold” five times in his letter.

It seems our hope is the first line of attack; consider it a giant bulls-eye for the enemy.

Take in this sample medley of verses:

  • Hebrews 3:6 ~ But Christ is faithful as a son over God's house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast.

  • Hebrews 10:23 ~ Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.
The faithfulness of Christ and the faithfulness of God are reminders that bookend numerous calls to hold on to our hope. In this book the immense importance God places on faithfulness is impressed upon the reader. He knows just how often we consider quitting as an option and how vulnerable we are when we do.

Sometimes I wonder why courage is not included as a Fruit of the Spirit. Doesn’t courage reflect the reality of our faith? Aren’t we enabled by the power of the Holy Spirit to act bravely about what we believe? When I’ve reached a point of discouragement – or even despair – it feels all too easy to give up hope. Strength to fight for courage comes only by His grace and empowerment. The fear of living without hope is far greater than fear of anything else looming large before me.

Thankfully He has also provided volumes of encouragement through living examples of those that faced impossible situations that hoped against all odds. One excellent model is Job, in the midst of the most horrendous suffering, when he declared;

“I know that my Redeemer lives,

and that in the end he will stand upon the earth.

And after my skin has been destroyed,

yet in my flesh I will see God;”

[Job 19:25-26]

We must fill up daily on the very promises of God that cause the Holy Spirit to produce needed courage. Deliberately pausing to remember “we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved” [Heb 10:39] for we have been born into a living hope [1 Pt 1:3].

“May our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who loved us and by His grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word.” Amen.

A String of Hosannas

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, [2 Cor 1:3]
.
Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. [Ps 63:3-4]

It is good to praise the LORD and make music to your name,
O Most High, [Ps 92:1]

[You], O Lord, are a compassionate
and gracious God, slow to anger,
abounding in love and faithfulness. [Ps 86:15]
.
Your word, O LORD, is eternal;
it stands firm in the heavens. [Ps 119:89]

Sing to God, sing praise to his name,
extol him who rides on the clouds
his name is the LORD—and rejoice before him. [Ps 68:4]

Uplifted Arms

Sing, O Daughter of Zion; shout aloud, O Israel!
Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, O Daughter of Jerusalem!
The LORD has taken away your punishment,
he has turned back your enemy.
.
The LORD, the King of Israel, is with you;
never again will you fear any harm.
On that day they will say to Jerusalem,
"Do not fear, O Zion;
do not let your hands hang limp.

The LORD your God is with you,
he is mighty to save.
He will take great delight in you,
he will quiet you with his love,
he will rejoice over you with singing."

"The sorrows for the appointed feasts
I will remove from you;
they are a burden and a reproach to you.
At that time I will deal with all who oppressed you;
I will rescue the lame
and gather those who have been scattered.
I will give them praise and honor
in every land where they were put to shame.
At that time I will gather you;
at that time I will bring you home.
I will give you honor and praise
among all the peoples of the earth
when I restore your fortunes before your very eyes,"
says the LORD.

The God Who Is With Us is omnipotent and takes great delight in us. He is mighty to rescue us from the grasp of any and all strongholds and He quiets us with His infinite love.

Our Savior has come and will come again. He delivered us from the burden of the feasts required by the Law. How many times today has He turned back our enemy even without our awareness?

His rejoicing over us is reassurance of our redemption.

Let's not be frozen in fear; stuck in complacency; unmoved by our awesome God. Let not our hands hang limp -- but raised up in jubilant song.

Here is a simple equation:

"Says the Lord" = Good as Done!

In preparation for the coming Sabbath; let's rejoice that our Father sings over us with joy. Let's raise our hands, praising His Name.

As we delight in You, teach us, Lord, to rest in Your love. Accept my bride-song as worship as I wait for You to bring me home. Amen.

Divine Illumination

I'm not one that tracks the moon's stages and phases; therefore, I don't usually know when to expect a full moon. It's an understatement to say I was delightfully surprised Tuesday night.

Coach kept the team out on the soccer fields way past sunset Tuesday night. Darkness came early and it came quickly. Beyond the wall of trees at the far end of the field I could see a glow in the distant sky. Just peeking through the branches I caught a glimpse of light; "must be a full moon", I mused (little did I know!). Practice over, when I neared the clearing, the breath simply escaped my lungs in praise. What a glorious harvest moon! Big, bold, bright, beautiful. The stark darkness awash in majestic light. Breathtaking luminosity! And not even light in itself - purely reflection.

It brought Monday's Psalm reading to my lips. Let's look at the grace of our God depicted in these few verses by the psalmist and pause from our worldly cares and woes to offer thanks:

O LORD, you preserve both man and beast.
How priceless is your unfailing love!
Both high and low among men
find refuge in the shadow of your wings.
They feast on the abundance of your house;
you give them drink from your river of delights.
For with you is the fountain of life;
in your light we see light.

This speaks to the truth of God's providence and that He does not show favoritism in His provisions. We are enlightened to God's infinite grace that never diminishes. He lavishly bestows upon us an abundance of delightful blessings. In Him there is an overflowing life.

Divine Provision ~ Divine Gifts ~ Divine Illumination
Glance back with me a few verses for the backdrop:

Your love, O LORD, reaches to the heavens,
your faithfulness to the skies.
Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains,
your justice like the great deep.

Sound familiar? And I'm not referring to the song. Sound reminiscent of Eden? Peruse the landscape; mountains in the background are God's righteousness; the sea before are His judgements; above us a sky filled with His faithfulness; His loves stretches to the heavens. The perfect refuge. Country of the godly. A preserve for rich or poor - man or beast. The passport; know and acknowledge God.

~ Grandly Divine ~

Imagine yourself in the landscape - God's country - covered on every side by His wings. Soothes the soul.

Attempting to capture the moment in a photo, my daughter lagged behind, yet in the shadow of the thick trees, exclaiming; "I couldn't see the moon - but I could see the sky." When she finally caught sight of it, we reveled in the moment together. How often, though, do we aim for the vast generalities of our spiritual life and don't take the time to focus in on the details? Ah, but that's another subject for another day.

For now, I will feast upon the defining character of our Jehovah God in these verses - it re-sets my hope-meter to face the cityscape - and I'll commit it to faith - safe for a moonless night sky.

"Continue Your love to those who know You, Your righteousness to the upright in heart," Faithful Father. May the praise of the Psalms be ever on our lips that we may continually offer up to You the honor due Your Righteous Name. Amen.

A String of Hosannas

Praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD,
O my soul.

I will praise the LORD all my life;
I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

Do not put your trust in princes,
in mortal men, who cannot save.
When their spirit departs,
they return to the ground;
on that very day their plans come to nothing.

Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the LORD his God,
the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea,
and everything in them—
the LORD, who remains faithful forever.

He upholds the cause of the oppressed
and gives food to the hungry.
The LORD sets prisoners free,
the LORD gives sight to the blind,
the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down,
the LORD loves the righteous.

The LORD watches over the alien
and sustains the fatherless and the widow,
but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.

The LORD reigns forever,
your God, O Zion,
for all generations.
Praise the LORD. [Ps 146]

Prayers of the Saints

"The Lord is my peace.
I shall not live in anxiety.

He puts me under His wing of comfort
and calms my spirit within me.

He takes all my anxieties on Himself and
helps me to focus on Him.

Yes, though I walk through a time
of grave uncertainties and fierce anxieties,
I will not fret -- for You are my peace.

Your Word and Your presence calm me now.
You hold my uncertainties in the palm of Your hand.

You soothe my anxious mind --
You smooth my wrinkled brow.

Surely serenity and trust in You
shall fill me all the days of my life.
And I shall keep my mind stayed on You
forever."

A Series of Prayer Quotes

It's All In A Day

You never know what a day may hold. You rise and follow a particular routine, all the while unconsciously thinking “It’s all in a day.”

Tasks complete one by one, you move to the next daily requirement - for it’s all in a day.

General plans before you, certain responsibilities listed to accomplish. It’s all in a day.

You move along, making progress, when suddenly the day shifts gears into the unknown, the unexpected.

I had just that sort of day yesterday. Several remarkable things occurred within the unplanned drama:

1) I frequently reflected back upon the thoughts penned and posted on Monday’s blog. Hope, faith, God’s promises. Thankful to have these stored so fresh in my mind.
2) God filled me with an awareness of His presence and His peace. Uncertain of many things – but sure of One.
3) I was surrounded with loving, caring friends. Drawing great strength and comfort from their prayers, their touch, their smiles. (This detour certainly not planned in their day!). Their unhesitant response, a sacrifice not to be considered. (Big hugs of thanks, sisters! I love you so!)

This morning I read Psalm 33; reminded that the Lord is faithful in all He does, the earth is full of His unfailing love.

He thwarts the purposes of the peoples.
But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever,
the purposes of His heart through all generations.

He watches all who live on earth –
He who forms the hearts of all,
who considers everything they do.

The eyes of the Lord are on those who fear Him,
on those whose hope is in His unfailing love.

We wait in hope for the Lord;
He is our help and our shield.
In him our hearts rejoice,
for we trust in his holy name.
May your unfailing love rest upon us, O LORD,
even as we put our hope in you.

He considered the hearts of all He gathered together and they were His - all His - to use, to help, to serve, to show the depth and faithfulness of His love. All of our plans were altered – set aside so that His came first. One of His own was in distress and in need and those who trust in His holy name responded without a second thought. His love indeed rested upon us and we waited in hope. He did not fail us.

Hope in the Lord – it’s all in a day.

I praise You, God, for Your unfailing love. I thank You for surrounding me with dear friends with pure hearts for You, for touching me with Your love through them. You are our hope and our shield and our hearts rejoice in You. May my heart always be in tune with Yours and may the plans of my day be surrendered to Yours always. When You look upon this earth, may You find hearts that fear You.

Endure We Must

"Be strong and take heart,
all you who hope in the LORD."

The author of Hebrews exhorts firmly and emphatically:

"Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess,
for he who promised is faithful. "[Heb 10:23]

In Paul's final charge to Timothy, he expounded the "godlessness in the last days" which is also prevalent today.

The challenge before us to maintain faith is no less possible for the mighty, conquering Holy Spirit. In some ways it makes our hope that much brighter and makes our reward seem that much more valuable.

We are surrounded by suffering and distress on every side. As a good friend of mine recently said; "the evening news is a report of satan's daily victories."

That cannot -- and must not -- be our focus. Let's read these God-breathed words of Paul:

"Here is a trustworthy saying:
If we died with him,
we will also live with him;
if we endure,
we will also reign with him.
If we disown him,
he will also disown us;
if we are faithless,
he will remain faithful,
for he cannot disown himself."

Dear fellow-believer, I pray that brings you comfort. God intended it to bring us encouragement and strength in these uncertain times. May we sing the song of the redeemed, for God will deliver his people.

In this same letter (Paul's last), he testified to God's rescue:

"persecutions, sufferings—what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured. Yet the Lord rescued me from all of them." [2 Tm 3:11b]

The Greek word translated here to rescue means to "draw to oneself". God brought Paul through many dangers and persecutions in order to bring him closer. His testimony now our edification.

In final closing to this letter, he proclaims from first-hand experience;

"The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen." [2 Tm 4:18]

One of our worst enemies is fear - particularly fear of death. Death shall be the final enemy defeated. God may not rescue us from it, but he has promised to rescue the faithful through it; as he so often does from the myriad of other trying circumstances of our day.

Discouragement brings about an ease to forget what we know, sometimes even believe. Remain in His Word where faith speaks to our hearts. For endure we must.
"... we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved." [Heb 10:39]

Eternal Father; I praise You for Your faithfulness. Pour out Your hope upon the down-hearted and use me to offer encouragement. In the thick of life, bring to our remembrance Your Promise, Your Word, the Light of Your Son, and an enduring faith. In the Name of our Victor and King, Christ Jesus, Amen.

A String of Hosannas

I will sing of your love and justice;
to you, O LORD, I will sing praise. [Ps 101:1]

Surely his salvation is near those who fear him,
that his glory may dwell in our land. [Ps 85:9]

For the LORD God is a sun and shield;
the LORD bestows favor and honor;
no good thing does he withhold
from those whose walk is blameless.
O LORD Almighty,
blessed is the man who trusts in you. [Ps 84:11-12]

Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD;
let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come before him with thanksgiving
and extol him with music and song.
For the LORD is the great God,
the great King above all gods.
In his hand are the depths of the earth,
and the mountain peaks belong to him.
The sea is his, for he made it,
and his hands formed the dry land.
Come, let us bow down in worship,
let us kneel before the LORD our Maker; [Ps 95:1-6]

In His Arms

While struggling with some earthly cares
I felt the Master's hand,
I heard him sigh and softly say,
"My child, I understand.
Come, leave this valley, follow me;
Together we will climb.
Our journey must begin at once
While there is ample time."
He pointed toward a mountain high
Where strong winds often blow.
It looked too vast for me to scale;
I cried "I cannot go."
But as I sadly turned away,
Again he spoke to me,
"Remember I once climbed for you
A mount called Calvary.
So do not question where I lead;
Go forward, never stop."
And then he took me in his arms
And we were at the top.
